Event Management – A Challenge
After the completion of our movie Ullasam, we were taken to the SICA (South Indian Cinematographists Association) by Jeeva. We were asked to direct their 25th silver jubilee celebration named Oli Utsav which was a grand event. In the presence of stalwarts like K.Balachander, P.C.Sriram and other senior cinematographers, we were given the great opportunity of a life time.
Though we were involved in directing smaller events like P.C.Sorcar’s Indrajal, Lioni’s talk show, till then, this was a big challenge for us.
First we prepared a list of programs i.e., Songs, Dances, Speeches and prize distributions. Next, a minute by minute time table was made. Then we prepared scripts for the various comperes. We were ready for execution.
Bollywood start Hrithik Roshan started off the rehearsal with Kala Master’s troupe, also involving many celebrities from cine world. A magnificent set was put up in Nehru Indoor Stadium with 27 cameras, massive lighting arrangements and dashing costumes for the artists were organized by an army of workers. India’s best cameramen like Ravi K Chandran, Rajiv Menon, Ravi Varman slogged tirelessly putting their best efforts.
The live event was a tense five hours involving dance, awards distribution, speech and songs repeating continuously, artists should be ready backstage with costumes for the next program, perfect timing to be maintained, myself in the backstage and Jery in the panel with walkie talkies in hand did finish the event successfully. Huge coordination was required and we made it without a hitch. We were honored with a shield by Shri.K.Balachander. The program was broadcast in SUN TV in 2002.
After a gap we had another opportunity to manage the launch of WIN TV, this time it was also a live relay, so more stress on us to deliver. Timing was the crucial factor. Event attended by Union Minister Pon.Radhakrishnan and other celebrities. Dance program was by Swingers group. Actor Bharat was a dancer in that group. Later he was selected for the movie Boys (2003) which became a super hit. We selected Jeeth, Irene and others from that group for our next movie Whistle (2003). We were happy that we lived up to the trust and expectations of Mr.Devanathan and Mr.Florent Pereira of WIN TV, in making the event a huge success and also telecast it live.
